NLMK commissions unique continuous casting machine

The first slabs have been successfully cast at Novolipetsk’s (NLMK’s main production site in Lipetsk) newly revamped 2.5 mtpa continuous casting machine (CCM-8). The objective of the CCM-8 reconstruction project was to increase output, expand the product mix and ensure a consistently high quality of concast slabs for further conversion into flats.

Currently the maximum thickness of slabs produced by continuous casting machines in Russia is 300 mm. Following the CCM-8 revamp NLMK has become the first Russian steelmaker to produce slabs with thicknesses of up to 355 mm for further conversion into thick plate, including at NLMK’s subsidiaries in Europe, DanSteel and Clabecq. Thick plates are in high demand from mechanical engineering and power industries.

As part of the project, the CCM was fully revamped, ladle turrets were replaced, and closed water cooling systems were installed. CCM-8 is the first in Russia to use a dynamic secondary cooling model to improve the surface quality and internal structure of the semis. The facility is fully equipped with an advanced automation and instrumentation system.

The RUR4.7 bln project is part of the second stage of NLMK’s Technical Upgrade Program, which, alongside other activities, is aimed at increasing steel output from 9 to 12.4 mtpa at NLMK’s Lipetsk site. The Company has recently announced the commencement of hot testing at its new Blast Furnace No. 7; in late September hot testing is scheduled to begin at BOF-6.

For reference:
CCM-8 is the 5th production facility for continuous slab casting commissioned at the Lipetsk site following a revamp. CCM-3 is currently undergoing reconstruction at BOF Shop No.1. Following its commissioning, planned for Q4 2011, it will be able to produce up to 1 mtpa of high-quality slabs.
