NLMK expands range at new Kaluga billet plant

Russia's Novolipetsk Steel has expanded the range of billet to be produced at its new Kaluga steelworks, according to press-service of general contractor Siemens VAI.

In addition to the original 8-strand caster to produce 125x125mm billets, additional equipement wll be supplied, enabling it to produce 150x150mm billet, Siemens VAI says. The works in Vorsino is scheduled to start operating in 2011.

Kaluzhsky Steel belongs to the Maxi Group, a majority shareholding of the Russian company Novolipetsk Steel. In order to cover the growing regional demand for steel in Russia, Siemens VAI Metals Technologies won an order to erect the new compact steelworks in Vorsino, Oblast Kaluga, at the end of 2008. The scope of supply included an Ultimate electric arc furnace, secondary metallurgical equipment, dedusting equipment, the continuous billet casting machine, the media supply equipment plus the electrical equipment and automation system. The new plant will produce 1.5 million metric tons of liquid steel per year.The carbon steel and alloy steel produced there will be cast and rolled as billets.
