RUSAL to Invest 58 bln Rubles in Construction of Taishet Aluminium Smelter
According to Vasily Sobolev, Director of Construction Dpt, Taishet Aluminium Smelter in 2007-2011 UC RUSAL will invest the total of 58 bln rubles in the construction of Taishet Aluminium Smelter with the capacity of 750 thou tons of primary aluminium in the Irkutsk region. According to the existing relations between UC RUSAL and lending agencies, funds of the shareholders of the company will make up around 30% of the investments in the construction, the rest 70% — attracted financial resources. Taishet Aluminium Smelter will consist of four electrolysis plants each one equipped with 186 РА-400 electrolyzers. The main units (electrilyzers, cathodic and anodic equipment) will be manufactured in the Krasnoyarsk region and Khakasiya. UC RUSAL and Areva were established to manufacture electrical equipment. Engineering and Construction Company incorporated in Engineering and Construction Division of UC RUSAL was appointed the general contractor of the construction. Since 2004 Engineering and Construction Company has been engaged in the construction of Khakassky Aluminium Smelter.

A territory to the North-East of Taishet was chosen as the construction site. The total area of the smelter comes to around 389 hectares. The technical and economic basis of the construction of the smelter was worked out by Bechtel Corporation and Engineering and Construction Division of UC RUSAL. The first stage of the smelter with the production capacity of 187 thou tpy is planned to be put into operation in December 2009. Putting into operation of the second stage with the production capacity of 187 thou tpy is planned for October 2010, the third and fourth stages of the same capacity are planned to be put into operation in June and December 2011 respectively. An annual electricity consumption of Taishet Aluminium Smelter will come to 10,4 bln kWt/h. Besides, influence of investment projects on primary aluminium production on development of Russian aluminium semi-finished products will be discussed at «Russian Market of Aluminium Rolled Products and Shapes», which will be held on May 29-30, 2008.
